BCH CPALL GULF MTC OR TRUE
Daily top picks
To move down, watch at 1127
The SET is expected to move down. If the index falls below 1127, it may be the start of a new decline, with next support at 1120 or lower, while resistances are at 1135/1140. If the index cannot stand above that, there may be a short-term rebound before falling. Watch the Supreme Court’s hearing of former PM Thaksin’s case today and whether it will affect the market.
Today’s highlights
• Today the Supreme Court has scheduled a fact-finding hearing on the enforcement of the prison sentence for Thaksin Shinawatra. His lawyers will attend the hearing, but he himself will not go.
• The EPPO reduced the collection fee on diesel by Bt0.50/liter to Bt2.40/liter and maintained the retail price at Bt31.94/liter to compensate for the remaining marketing margin of Bt1.40 from Bt1.80/liter, following rising global crude oil prices. This is seen as helping the marketing costs for oil traders (OR).
• The BOT announced regulation of hire-purchase and leasing businesses, in view of their high impact on Thai household debt at Bt1.6tn (10% of Thai household debt). We view this as neutral and potentially positive for SAWAD, as it is possible the BoT will maintain or increase the interest rate ceiling for motorcycle hire-purchase to align with higher risks and costs.
• UTCC reported the fourth month of a decline in the Consumer Confidence Index in May to 54.2, the lowest since March 2023, due to consumer concerns about the trade war, feeling the economy is slowing and increasingly difficult credit access. This is seen as having negative sentiment on domestic stocks such as retail and restaurants.
• Today, the NBTC board will hold a special meeting to finalize the qualifications of spectrum license applicants, continuing from yesterday. If approved, there will be consideration of qualifications for two applicants and scheduling of a mock auction before the actual auction on June 29.
• US PPI for May increased 0.1% MoM, lower than expected, and initial jobless claims were 248,000 for last week, higher than expected, indicating a labor market slowdown, easing inflation concerns and raising hopes the Fed will cut rates.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as there are many factors to follow: trade negotiations between the US and trading partners, especially China, India and Japan, political uncertainty (a cabinet reshuffle) and the effect brought by the calculation adjustment for DELTA to comply with the limit of a single stock weighting in SET50/SET100 at 10% starting on Jul 1. We believe the SET has already passed its critical point (downside of 1032), which reflected the worst-case scenario for US tariffs. We retain our view of an opportunity to accumulate if the SET falls to 1120-1100. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The many uncertainties are expected to keep the SET moving sideways: US trade negotiations, politics and SET50/SET100 index calculation adjustment. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in four main themes and two trading themes with specific positive factors:
1. Earnings plays: those with 2Q25 profit expected to grow strongly, and core profit growth both YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, TRUE, CPALL, BTG and CPF.
2. SET50 stocks with SETESG rating higher than A, with dividend yield of above 5% expected, and on which we recommend Outperform – PTT, KTB, BBL and HMPRO.
3. Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: a) 2025 profit is expected to grow,
b) financial position is strong and c) are steady dividend payers - ADVANC, BDMS, CPALL, PTT, BCH, BTG and AP.
4. Defensive stocks whose revenue is largely domestic. For risk-averse investors waiting for greater clarity on Trump’s tariffs – BCH, CPALL, GULF, MTC, OR, TRUE.
5. Trading idea: For high-risk takers who want to speculate. a) Stocks likely to benefit from passive funds reducing DELTA holdings to 10% and increasing others in SET50 – PTT, ADVANC, AOT, GULF and CPF and b) stocks able to recover quickly once there is progress on trade negotiations – AMATA, AOT, MINT, PTT, TU and WHA.
Daily top picks
ADVANC: Earnings are stable, and price has a catalyst from strong profit momentum. 2Q25 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, with the conclusion of the spectrum auction expected to be good, adding to profit. It is well shielded from the trade war.
GPSC: Price has short-term catalysts from lower natural gas price and bond yield. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 3.9%, supported by higher capacity, selection in the renewable energy program phase 2.1 and unaffected by the global minimum tax (GMT).
