Daily top picks

No conclusion in trade talks

The SET is expected to slow down after a surge yesterday, driven by DELTA and fund inflow into ASEAN markets (Vietnam and Indonesia) in response to tariff deals with the US. Resistances are at 1212/1230, while supports are at 1185/1180. The index at around 1230-1250 (PER of 15x) is seen to reflect some expectation that Thailand will get US tariffs of 20% or lower. Follow the progress of in trade talks, which have yet to reach a conclusion.

Today’s highlights

• Yesterday, former PM Thaksin Shinawatra delivered a special speech supporting the increase of airport PSC fees to boost revenue and expand airports, elevate tourism by enhancing security through AI camera installation and promote F1 racing. He also advocated for a nationwide crypto sandbox program and expressed concerns about US trade negotiations impacting agricultural products, gems and SME businesses.
• The ERC voted to open public hearings from Jul 17-28 for electricity tariffs for Sep-Dec 2025 at Bt3.98-5.10/unit, citing easing fuel costs. We view electricity rates above Bt3.98/unit as unlikely after the Minister of Energy previously confirmed rates would not exceed Bt3.99/unit. We maintain Outperform on GULF and BCPG.
• The Thai Retailers Association reports a continued decline in the Retailer Confidence Index in Jun, reaching its lowest for 42 months, reflecting fragile consumer purchasing power and delayed business investment. It urged urgent stimulus through two approaches: Easy e-Receipt and Shop Dee Mee Kuen programs.
• US retail sales in June rose 0.6%MoM, exceeding market expectations, while initial jobless claims fell by 7,000 to 221,000 in the previous week - the lowest in three months and below market forecasts, indicating labor market strength.
• New York Fed President warned that the impact of Trump's tariff measures is just beginning, and slightly restrictive monetary policy remains appropriate, giving the Fed time to analyze data. He estimates trade tariffs will add approximately 1% to inflation during 2H25-1H26.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways on continued concerns over the US tariffs, to take effect on Aug 1. Thailand faces a 36% tariff, higher than main competitors in ASEAN, and may lead to loss of competitiveness and pressure GDP growth. Trade negotiations is the main issue to monitor. However, if the index falls below 1100 with 2025F PER lower than 12x, we see this as suitable for accumulation for medium to long-term investors. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to move sideways on continued concern over Thailand’s facing higher tariff rates than competitors in ASEAN, which will lead to a loss of competitiveness and pressure GDP growth. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in three main themes and three trading themes with specific positives:
1. Earnings plays whose profits are expected to grow strongly, with 2Q25 core profit up YoY and QoQ, and expected to grow YoY in 3Q25 – ADVANC, BCH, CBG, CPALL and SCCC.
2. Defensive stocks with low volatility, sheltered from external risks as well as from domestic uncertainties, while paying consistent dividends – ADVANC, BCH and DIF.
3. High-quality dividend stocks (SET50 with SETESG rating higher than A) to generate short term cash flow, expected to pay an interim dividend on 1H25 with dividend yield higher than 2% - ADVANC, BBL and PTT.
4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers who want to speculate: 1) undervalued stocks (PER and PBV < -1SD) on which we recommend Outperform, with expected dividend yield of at least 3% - BBL, BCPG, BDMS, CPALL, DIF, PTT, SIRI and TIDLOR; 2) companies expected to benefit from tourism stimulus programs – ERW, CENTEL and AAV; and
3) companies that would recover rapidly if the US adjusts the tariff on Thailand down to 20% or lower – AMATA, GPSC and WHA.

Daily top picks

KTB: Price has a short-term catalyst after peers (BBL and TISCO) reported higher-than-expected earnings, while the stock is our top bank pick. It has upside from a higher dividend, peak in credit cost in 1Q25 - and expected to trend down over the rest of the year, lower quality asset risk than others and high LLR coverage.

GPSC: Price has a short-term catalyst as the ERC proposed electricity price for Sep-Dec 2025 of Bt3.98-5.10/unit; it was expected to not be higher than the previous period’s Bt3.98/unit, which will have little impact on earnings. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 3.9%, driven by higher capacity, lower fuel cost and bond yield and not affected by the global minimum tax (GMT).
