Expecting a new government

The SET is expected to move up on greater clarity on government formation. The Speaker of the House has scheduled a vote for the PM on Sep 5. Watch the inflation figure to be announced today. If it is negative, it will be the fifth consecutive month and may raise the probability of a rate cut. Technically, if the index can stand above supports at 1255/1250, signs will be positive; resistances are at 1260/1280.

Today’s highlights

• The People's Party has resolved to vote for a PM candidate from the Bhumjaithai Party under various agreements, without joining the government and on the condition that parliament is dissolved within four months. Subsequently, the acting PM said the request for the royal decree to dissolve parliament was submitted yesterday, but the Privy Council Office returned the document as it was not compliant with regulations. Parliament has scheduled a vote for the next prime minister on Sep 5.
• The JSCCIB projects GDP will grow 1.8-2.2% in 2025, with 2H25 expected to expand only 1%, pressured by political uncertainty that may impact budget disbursement, private sector investment confidence and risks of credit rating downgrades. Export value is expected to grow 2-3% with inflation at 0.5-1.0%.
• Sources reveal eight OPEC+ member countries are considering increasing crude oil production capacity again at the OPEC meeting on Sep 7 to regain oil market share, following previous increases totaling 2.5MBD or 2.4% of global demand. This caused Brent crude prices to fall 2.5% yesterday.
• US JOLTS in Jul 2025 dropped to 7.18mn, below expectations and hitting a 1-year low, supporting further Fed rate cuts.
• Thai inflation is to be released today. The market expects inflation to decline for the fifth month, at a rate similar to last month’s fall of 0.7%. A continued decline is positive for financial and real estate sectors.
• Thailand has opportunities to become a new destination for PCB manufacturing, playing a crucial role in the AI supply chain. Nearly 60 companies from China and Taiwan are accelerating investments, supporting Thailand's emergence as a PCB hub.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as investors lack confidence and take the sidelines as they wait for political clarification. This week watch August inflation. If it is negative for the fifth month, the market will expect a further rate cut. Other data include China and US manufacturing and services PMIs, US trade balance and US employment figures. If the figures are strongly improving, the market expects the Fed to again cut the rate in Sep, which will influence global markets. Our recommended investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as investors stay sidelined ahead of a political resolution. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in two main themes and three trading themes with specific positives:
1. Earnings plays whose 2H25 earnings are expected to grow, driven by specific and seasonal factors - ADVANC, BCPG, GULF, SCC and TIDLOR.
2. High-quality dividend stocks (SET50 with SETESG rating higher than A) to generate short term cash flow, expected to pay an interim dividend on 1H25 with dividend yield higher than 2% - PTT, TTB, HMPRO and KKP.
3. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers who want to speculate: 1) laggard plays that are expected to benefit from fund inflow; choose SET50 stocks that have underperformed the SET QTD and whose valuation is attractive (PER and PBV 2025F < -1SD) and have strong fundamentals – BDMS, CPALL, MTC, PTT and WHA; 2) stocks that benefit from the interest rate down cycle and/or weakening dollar (baht appreciation); recommend REITs – FTREIT and LHSC , Property – AP and SIRI Leasing – MTC and TIDLOR and Utilities - GULF and GPSC; and 3) stocks that benefit from new stimulus from new government; recommend Tourism – CENTEL, Industrial Estates - AMATA, Construction Materials – SCC and Commerce – CPALL and GLOBAL.

Daily top picks

OR: Price has a short-term catalyst from a drop in oil price. Tourism is expected to bring recovery to 3Q25, fueled by higher seasonal fuel demand and expansion of Café Amazon and convenience stores. Today the stock goes XD, paying a dividend of Bt0.30. Short-term target price is Bt14.

GULF: The stock benefits from lower yield. In 2H25 there will be startups of seven new power plants totaling 597MW and solar and Solar+BESS projects. Jackson plant has been getting the new capacity payment rate since Jun, and revenue from data center 25MW began to come in Aug. Short-term target price is Bt48.50.
