4Q24: Beat on investment income

With a big beat on investment income, 4Q24 results reflected decent premium growth, higher combined ratio brought by the widespread flooding and a recovery in ROI. We expect good earnings growth in 2025 off decent premium growth, easing combined ratio and better ROI. We thus maintain our Outperform rating with an unchanged TP of Bt0.7.

4Q24: Beat on investment income. THRE reported 4Q24 net profit of Bt78mn (down 4% YoY but surging 545% QoQ), 65% above our estimates due to better-than-expected investment income, chiefly FX gain. 2024 earnings rose 9%, driven by good premium growth and easing combined ratio.

Highlights:
1. Earned premiums rose 11% YoY and 2% QoQ in 3Q24 on continued growth in both personal lines and commercial lines via expansion in both domestic and international markets, tagging the “hard market” (stronger reinsurance premium rates) in the global reinsurance market.
2. Combined ratio rose 139 bps YoY and 99 bps QoQ to 97.16% in 4Q24 due to a rise in loss ratio, which was pushed up 319 bps YoY and 178 bps QoQ to 48.32% by the widespread flooding in northern and southern Thailand.
3. ROI rose 2.99 ppt YoY and 9.13 ppt QoQ to 5.46% in 4Q24 on a rise in both yield on investment and investment gain. The unrealized FX loss in 3Q24 turned around to a gain in 4Q24.

2025 outlook. We expect 2025F earnings to grow 22%, backed by an estimated 8% earned premiums growth, a 44 bps ease in combined ratio to 96.2% from economies of scale and a 44 bps recovery in ROI on no repeat of the FX loss.

Maintain Outperform with an unchanged TP. We maintain our Outperform with an unchanged TP of Bt0.7 (based on 0.7x PBV or 11x PE for 2025). We expect THRE to continue to grow earnings in 2025, backed by decent premium growth, improving combined ratio and rising ROI.

Risk considerations. Key risks include: 1) higher claims than expected, 2) slower premium growth than expected, 3) ESG risk on market conduct.
