THREL - 4Q67: loss ratio

4Q24: Worse than expected loss ratio
THREL’s 4Q24 was worse than expected, with its bottom line back in the red due to higher loss ratio (from credit insurance). We expect earnings to turn around to net profit in 2025, but still be weak on a better combined ratio after phasing in the upward adjustment in group health insurance premium rates following a rise in medical inflation. We maintain Underperform with a cut in TP to Bt1.2 in view of weak profitability as it fights medical inflation.
4Q24: Worse than expected. THREL did worse than expected in 4Q24, returning to a net loss of Bt26mn from Bt14mn net profit in 3Q24 and 4Q23. Behind this was a larger loss ratio than expected. It recorded a Bt85mn loss in 2024.
Highlights:
1) In 4Q24, earned premiums rose 24% YoY but fell 24% QoQ. In 2024, earned premiums increased 35% on growth in individual health insurance, an adjustment in group health insurance premium rates, and the expansion of credit insurance products in the international market.
2) Combined ratio rose 6.03 ppt YoY and 4.53 ppt QoQ to 104.26% in 4Q24, worse than expected on a rise in loss ratio of 9.95 ppt YoY and 4.06 ppt QoQ to 82.57%. In 4Q24, two major credit insurance claims occurred, impacting claim expense by Bt50mn.
3) ROI rose 36 bps QoQ but slipped 5 bps in 3.2% in 4Q24.
Earnings outlook. We adjust our assumed loss ratio for 2025 to fine tune with 4Q24, which cuts our 2025F by 20%. We expect earnings to continue weak in 2025 but turn around to net profit of Bt40mn on a better combined ratio after phasing in the upward adjustment in group health insurance premium rates following a rise in medical inflation. In 2025, we forecast 15% growth in earned premiums, a 341 bps ease in combined ratio to 100.7% and a 10 bps fall in ROI to factor in a decline in bond yield.
Maintain Underperform with a cut in TP. We maintain Underperform with a new TP of Bt1.2 (based on 0.6x PBV or 19x PE for 2025F) due to weak profitability.
Risks. 1) Risk to loss ratio from rising medical inflation, 2) capital market volatility, 3) the implementation of new accounting standards and 4) ESG risk from market conduct.
