Worse than expected on all fronts, 4Q24 results reflected weaker fee and service income, lower gross margin and higher opex to income ratio. We cut our 2025F by 7%, lowering our topline growth and gross margin assumptions. We now expect 2025F earnings to grow 11%. We keep our Neutral rating with a new TP of Bt18.
4Q24: Worse than expected. TQM reported 4Q24 earnings of Bt177mn (down 19% YoY, -17% QoQ), a large 23% below estimates due to lower toplines and lower margin.
Highlights:
1. Fee & service income: -1% YoY, -5% QoQ in 4Q24, worse than our earlier expectation of a seasonal QoQ rise. In 2024, fee and service income grew 6%, below our forecast of 9%.
2. Gross margin: -680 bps YoY, -359 bps QoQ to 48.37% in 4Q24, worse than expected.
3. Opex to income ratio: Worse than expected, +305 bps YoY, +148 bps QoQ to 24.03% in 4Q24, with a 13% YoY and 2% QoQ rise in opex.
Cut 2025F earnings. We cut our 2025F by 7%, lowering our assumptions for topline growth and gross margin. We now expect 2025F earnings to grow 11%. We cut fee & service income growth to 6% from 9% in 2025, factoring in potentially slower GDP growth. TQM is planning to get into individual life insurance by cross-selling to its existing 3mn customers, planning for Bt2bn in individual life insurance premiums in 2025, which could add ~Bt800mn in revenue (assuming a 40% commission rate on first-year premiums), if successful. In view of currently weak consumer purchasing power, we conservatively factor in only minimal revenue from individual life insurance, leaving its target as upside. We expect the addition of individual life insurance to offset the expected slower growth in renewal auto premiums after a 26% fall in domestic car sales in 2024. We expect a 109 bps drop in cost to income ratio as a result of rising economies of scale.
Maintain Neutral with a TP cut. We maintain our Neutral rating with a cut in TP to Bt18 (based on 3.4x PBV or 12x 2025F PE) from Bt28.
Key risks: 1) Premiums may be hit by an uneven economic recovery and slowing car sales, 2) there could be a fall in commission rate from a change in product mix and rising competition and 3) ESG risk on market conduct.
