4Q24: Core earnings slightly below estimates

4Q24 core profit was Bt1.1bn, -7% YoY and -24% QoQ, 6% below estimates from high SG&A expenses. In 2025F, TU expects sales growth of 3-4% YoY, a stable/wider gross margin, high SG&A/sales and higher tax rate (GMT). We cut our 2025F core EPS by 6% to reflect the higher taxes. We expect 1Q25F to fall QoQ on seasonality and YoY on high transformation and marketing expenses. In the near term, its fragile outlook will cap share price upside, but its stock repurchase program, running from Jan 2-Jun 30 (56% utilized), shields share price downside. Maintain NEUTRAL with a new end-2025 TP of Bt14 (from Bt15), based on 13.5x PE (-0.5S.D. over 10-year PE).
4Q24 net profit was Bt1.2bn, up from a net loss of Bt17bn in 3Q24 but -13% QoQ, in line with market estimates. Excluding Bt84mn one-off gains (mainly FX), 4Q24 core profit was Bt1.1bn, -7% YoY and -24% QoQ, 6% below INVX and market estimates from high transformation and marketing expenses. The YoY drop was due to lower sales and higher SG&A/sales that outpaced a wider gross margin; the QoQ drop was seasonal. After a 1H24 DPS of Bt0.31, it is paying a 2H24 DPS of Bt0.35 (XD on Feb 28).

4Q24 highlights. Sales fell 1% YoY, from a 3.1% YoY unfavorable FX impact, offsetting the organic sales growth of 1.9% YoY. By unit, sales in the ambient unit grew 6% YoY from better sales volume, amid stable growth YoY in the pet care unit off the high 4Q23 base and port congestion affecting sales volume and a 5% YoY drop in the frozen unit from weak US demand and lower prices. Gross margin widened 90bps YoY to 18.7%, backed by wider margin in the pet care unit, which sold more high-margin premium products, and in the ambient unit from better sales volume and lower actual raw material costs that offset a narrower frozen unit margin from a sharp rise in shrimp price. SG&A/sales jumped 230bps YoY and 60bps QoQ to 14% from higher marketing and transformation costs (Bt300mn vs Bt234mn in 3Q24).

2025F guidance. In 2025, TU expects sales to grow 3-4%: organic growth of 6-7%, led by double digit growth in the pet care unit and low single-digit growth in the ambient and frozen units, on higher sales volume and prices with estimated average spot skipjack tuna price at US$1,580/ton (+10% YoY). These will offset the negative FX impact (-3% YoY). Gross margin (all units) is expected at 18.5-19.5% (vs 18.5% in 2024), aided by benefits from its transformation program; the exception is the pet care unit, where margin will fall from no repeat of a reversal from inventory write-down. SG&A/sales is expected at 13-13.5% (vs 13.3% in 2024) from a rise in transformation cost to Bt1bn in 2025 (0.7% to SG&A/sales) from Bt700mn in 2024 and more marketing expenses to lift sales of branded products. Application of the Global Minimum Tax (GMT) will push its 2025 tax expenses up by Bt300-350mn, not including any possible future Thai government compensation. TU began a repurchase program of up to 200mn shares (4.49% of total shares) with a budget of up to Bt3bn starting January 2 and running to June 30. In 2025TD, it has bought 112mn shares (56% of target) for Bt1.34bn (average repurchase price at Bt11.95/share).

Earnings cut. We cut our 2025F core EPS by 6%, factoring in a higher tax rate of 13% (from the GMT) from 8%, higher SG&A but lower interest expense (including perpetual bond) from lower cost of funds. It has refinanced matured LT and perpetual bonds with low-cost ST loans since late 2024, and it plans to issue new LT bonds in 2H25.

Key risks: Inflationary pressure and THB appreciation. Key ESG risks: GHG emission, waste & water management (E), customer welfare, product quality management, health & safety policies (S).
