ZEN reported a poor net profit of Bt13mn in 1Q25, down 18% YoY and 29% QoQ, on a poor restaurant business with SSS at -9.8%, low EBIT margin and rising tax expense. We forecast core earnings growth of 14% in 2025 off the low 2024 base. However, the poor climate warrants caution: consumer spending is weak and competition in the restaurant industry is stiff. We rate Neutral with a new end-2025 DCF TP of Bt6.5 (from Bt7.5 after earnings cut).
1Q25 earnings weak. ZEN reported a weak net profit of Bt13mn in 1Q25, down 18% YoY and 29% QoQ, dragged down by a poor restaurant business with SSS at -9.8%, low EBIT margin and rising tax expense. (Details are on page 5.)
Neutral tone at the analyst meeting. ZEN is taking a more cautious view, targeting flat revenue growth in 2025 vs. its original target of 7% growth.
• Lower SSS contraction in 2Q25 from improvement in AKA Yakiniku off the low base and efforts to boost sales. In April-May, SSS is -4 to -5% overall, better than the -9.8% in 1Q25, driven by improvement at AKA Yakiniku (30% of restaurant revenue), where SSS improved from -30% in 1Q24 to -4% in 1Q25 and turned to growth of 20% in April. This reflects the fruition of the company’s efforts to boost sales by store revamping and introducing a lower price tier in 3Q24 to tap into a wider target group.
• ZEN is cautious on the restaurant business. This is reflected in a net decrease in owned outlets to 177 in 2024 from 181 in 2023, with a further fall to 165 planned by the end of 2025 as it closes poorly performing outlets and does not renew rental contracts. For its franchise business, ZEN plans to add 5-7 outlets in Thailand and 10-15 outlets overseas, starting with opening six new franchise outlets in 1Q25.
• Growing manufacturing and trading. ZEN targets revenue growth of 36% to Bt1.0bn in 2025, driven by capacity expansion in 1Q25 and more new product items to broaden its customer base for frozen seafood and increasing OEM products and distributors for its seasoning business.
Earnings fine-tuned, Neutral maintained. We cut our 2025 core earnings by 7% and 2026 by 7% to factor in: 1) (-) the weak 1Q25 results, 2) (-) a lower 2025 SSS assumption at -5% from +2%, 3) (-) fewer owned outlets at 165 in 2025 (from 182) and (4) (+) higher revenue from manufacturing and trading to Bt921mn (revised up by 7%). We now expect core earnings to grow 14% YoY in 2025 off the 2024 low base. However, we are cautious in view of the negatives such as weak consumer spending and competition in the restaurant industry and thus maintain our Neutral rating with a new end-2025 DCF TP of Bt6.5 (from Bt7.5), based on WACC at 7.1% and long-term growth of 2%. Catalysts are improving SSS and EBIT margin, as these will sustainably drive earnings.
Risks. 1) Economic slowdown impacting consumer spending, 2) intense competition, 3) rising costs and 4) change in consumer preferences. We see ESG risk as consumer safety and food quality (S).
