Daily top picks

Start to recover, catalyst is coming

The SET is expected to climb on an eased climate as China prepares to put an exemption on some US goods of the 125% tariff. This week the MPC meets (Apr 30). If there is a surprise, such as a bigger rate cut than expected, sentiment will be positive. May 2 will also see the launch of ThaiESGX funds, and this is expected to slow selling. Support is at 1150-1145 and resistance at 1170-1175.

Today’s highlights

• In an interview with TIME, Trump claimed to having made about 200 tariff agreements and expects negotiations to conclude in 3-4 weeks. He says he will have a "complete victory" if he can impose 20-50% tariffs on trading partners within this year.
• The Chinese government is considering waiving the 125% import duties on certain US products, including semiconductor-related goods, reflecting China's efforts to reduce economic pressure.
• The University of Michigan says April Consumer Confidence Index fell to 52.2, a 32-month low, while consumers expect inflation to rise 6.5% in the coming year - the highest since November 1981 - due to concerns about Trump's tariffs.
• The World Bank recommends reducing import tariffs to stimulate economic growth, warning that trade uncertainties are exacerbating debt problems and economic slowdowns in EMs.
• The UTCC says Thailand and Singapore will be the most severely affected by the trade war in ASEAN, projecting 2025 GDP growth of only 1.8% and 2.0% respectively. They recommend monetary policy easing and regulatory relaxation.
• The study on the Bt3.99/unit electricity rate by the Ministry of Energy, ERC, and EGAT is currently under discussion, particularly regarding legal aspects. An announcement is expected by the April 30 deadline, or by May 10 at the latest.
• The Office of Agricultural Economics reported that domestic pork prices increased 12% in 1Q25 due to a production decrease of 350,000 pigs this year and accelerated exports to maintain domestic price stability. This is viewed as positive for food sector stocks like BTG and CPF.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to climb on expectations: 1) the MPC cuts policy interest rate by 25bps and 2) Trump easing his stance on tariffs, especially to China, while negotiations continue to progress. However, the uncertainty of US tariffs and the hit to the world economy may deteriorate confidence on the growth outlook for 2Q25 earnings, causing investment to continue with caution and the SET to have limited upside. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to move up on expectations the MPC will cut policy interest rate on Wednesday and an easing stance by Trump on tariffs. Ay the same time, uncertainty still limits SET upside. Our investment strategy recommends "selective buy" in two main themes and one trading theme with specific positive factors:
1. Earnings plays with profit expected to grow through 1H25 with core profit growing both YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, TRUE, BTG, CPF and CPALL.
2. Undervalued stocks with 2025F PER and PBV below -1SD, profit growth expected in 2025 and solid financially – GULF, MTC, CBG and SPRC.
3. Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow, 2) strong financial position and 3) steady dividends with yield of at least 3% - on SET50 are ADVANC, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and on SET100 are BCH, BTG and AP.
4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers, we recommend: 1) stocks expected to benefit if the MPC cuts interest rate – REITs (DIF), Commerce (CPALL), Property (AP and SIRI), Leasing (MTC and TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF and GPSC), and 2) safe-haven stocks expected to be shielded from the trade war even if it escalates – BCH, CPALL, GULF, MTC, OR and TRUE.

Daily top picks

MTC: Price has a short-term catalyst from expectations the MPC will cut policy interest rate. It is undervalued, currently trading at 2025F PER of 13.9x or -2SD, against expected growth of 17% in 2025 profit. It is also expected to be a target of ThaiESGX with SETESG ratings of AAA.

KCE: For the short term the company is expected to benefit from a weak baht, lower copper cost and expectation of accelerated orders to stock goods before US tariffs take effect after the 90-day postponement (beginning of April), which may lead 1Q-2Q25 earnings to be higher than expected. Recommend to buy for trading at not higher than Bt18.20/share.
