Daily top picks

Range-bound, wait for new catalysts

The SET is expected to move sideways as the market waits for new catalysts such as tomorrow’s MPC meeting and progress in trade negotiations between the US and China and other trading partners in Asia. 1Q25 earnings announcements may cause the market to fluctuate. Support is at 1150-1145 and resistance at 1170-1175.

Today’s highlights

• The World Bank has revised down Thailand's 2025 GDP growth forecast to 1.6% from 2.9%, citing pressure from increased uncertainty in international trade policies that will impact exports and investment.
• Reuters reports a survey that indicates the BoT’s MPC will announce a 25bps policy rate cut at its meeting on April 30 to support the Thai economy, as inflation remains under control and lower economic growth gives room for the central bank to act.
• The FPO reports that Thailand's economy in March was supported by export growth for the ninth month, but foreign tourism and consumption of durable goods show signs of slowing down.
• The Ministry of Tourism and Sport reports an increase in revenue from foreign tourists in 3M25 of 10%YoY, driven by high-spending tourists and long-stay visitors from countries like India and Europe that were able to offset an overall decrease in numbers from China.
• The Deputy Minister of Transport shared progress on the Bt20 flat rate for light rail, saying that it is updating draft legislation details and will present it to the House on May 28-30.
• The China Gold Association (CGA) reports that China's gold consumption for jewellery in 1Q25 decreased by 26.85%YoY, while investment consumption grew by 29.81%YoY, resulting in an overall consumption decline of 5.96%YoY.
• The SET is extending trading hours for DR (Depositary Receipt) markets for American and European markets, allowing trading in both daytime (10:00 am - 4:30 pm) and nighttime (7:00 pm- 3:00 am) hours, starting May 6.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to climb on expectations: 1) the MPC cuts policy interest rate by 25bps and 2) Trump eases his stance on tariffs, especially to China, while negotiations continue to progress. However, the uncertainty of US tariffs and the hit to the world economy may deteriorate confidence on the growth outlook for 2Q25 earnings, causing investment to continue with caution and limit the SET’s upside. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to move up on expectations the MPC will cut policy interest rate on Wednesday and an easing stance by Trump on tariffs. At the same time, uncertainty continues to limit SET upside. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in two main themes and one trading theme with specific positive factors:
1. Earnings plays with profit expected to grow through 1H25 and core profit growing both YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, TRUE, BTG, CPF and CPALL.
2. Undervalued stocks with 2025F PER and PBV below -1SD, profit growth expected in 2025 and solid financially – GULF, MTC, CBG and SPRC.
3. Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow, 2) strong financial position and 3) steady dividends with yield of at least 3% - on SET50 are ADVANC, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and on SET100 are BCH, BTG and AP.
4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers, we recommend: 1) stocks expected to benefit if the MPC cuts interest rate – REITs (DIF), Commerce (CPALL), Property (AP and SIRI), Leasing (MTC and TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF and GPSC), and 2) safe-haven stocks expected to be shielded from the trade war even if it escalates – BCH, CPALL, GULF, MTC, OR and TRUE.

Daily top picks

MTC: Price has a short-term catalyst from expectations the MPC will cut policy interest rate. It is undervalued, currently trading at 2025F PER of 13.9x or -2SD, against expected growth of 17% in 2025 profit. It is also expected to be a target of ThaiESGX with SETESG ratings of AAA.

GULF: Price has a short-term catalyst from lower bond yield. It is expected to be a target of ThaiESGX funds with SETESG rating of AAA. 1H25 profit is expected to be strong, backed by higher capacity. Acquisition of INTUCH will support the balance sheet, raise borrowing ability and lower financial cost in the medium term.
