Daily top picks

Expecting some resolution of US tariffs on Thailand

The SET is expected move sideways and rest with supports at 1185-1180/1160, while resistances are at 1200/1210. Today Thailand will deliver its last proposal to the US, while the US announced tariff rates for Japan of 15%, with 19% for the Philippines. It is unknown whether the final proposal for Thailand will be close to the region or not.

Today’s highlights

• Trump announced successful trade agreements with the Philippines and Japan. The US will impose import tariffs on Philippine goods at 19% (down from 20%) and on Japanese goods at 15% (down from 25%). The Philippines will impose 0% tariffs on US imports and allow free market access for US goods, while Japan will invest US$550bn in the United States.
• The US Treasury Secretary signaled a 90-day extension of the trade deadline with China during meetings with Chinese representatives in Sweden next week, paving the way for continued US-China trade negotiations.
• The EU is considering full deployment of its Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI) if trade negotiations with the US fail by August 1 and the Trump administration proceeds with threats to impose 30% tariffs on EU imports starting August 1st.
• The Finance Minister says that the US has now looked at 90% of Thailand's new proposal and expects to complete the remaining 10% within 1-2 days and give a clear answer before August 1. Thailand hopes to receive tariff rates lower than 20% or equivalent to other ASEAN countries.
• The Cabinet approved the appointment of Vithai Ratanakor" as the new central bank governor, as proposed by the Finance Minister to replace the current governor, whose term expires on September 30. The Finance Minister hopes to coordinate monetary and fiscal policies in the same direction to address economic challenges.
• Foreign tourist arrivals in the previous week continued to grow on a weekly basis, rising 7% WoW to 611,596 people, driven by both short-haul and long-haul markets, particularly Japan, South Korea, India, and China.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to fluctuate. Although there is positive momentum from fund flows into EMs and announcement of new BoT governor - who is expected to relax monetary policy – it is important to continue to keep an eye on Thai-US trade talks after Thailand proposed 0% tariffs on ten thousand US goods. We believe at 1230-1250 the SET has already incorporated the expectation that Thailand will be assessed a tariff rate of 20% or lower, meaning the index may slow down or have limited upside, while tariffs of 20% or above will be a risk to the market. However, if the index falls below 1100 with 2025F PER lower than 12x, we see this as suitable for accumulation for medium to long-term investors. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to move sideways. Although there is positive momentum from fund flow into EMs and news of the new BoT governor, US-Thai trade negotiations continue to overhang. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in two main themes and two trading themes with specific positives:
1. Earnings plays whose profits are expected to grow strongly, with 2Q25 core profit up YoY and QoQ, and expected to grow YoY in 3Q25 – ADVANC, BCH, CBG, CPALL and SCCC.
2. High-quality dividend stocks (SET50 with SETESG rating higher than A) to generate short term cash flow, expected to pay an interim dividend on 1H25 with yield higher than 2% - ADVANC, BBL and PTT.
3. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers who want to speculate: 1) Companies that will recover quickly if the US lowers the tariff rate on Thailand to ~20% or below, while prices are coming back only slowly – AMATA, GPSC and WHA; and 2) undervalued stocks (PER and PBV < -1SD) on which we recommend Outperform and expect dividend yield of not lower than 3% - BBL, BCPG, BDMS, CPALL, DIF, PTT and SIRI.

Daily top picks

DIF: In the short term the fund is unaffected by market volatility. 2Q25 core profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ from lower interest expense, while dividend yield in 2025 will be a high 11%. Additional interest rate cuts in 2H25 are expected to be a catalyst to price.

MINT: Price is expected to be driven by expectation of an all-time high for core profit in 2Q25 of Bt3.3bn, growing 3% YoY and surging from Bt50mn in 1Q25, driven by entering high season in Europe, higher hospitality revenue and lower interest expense. MINT remains our top pick in Tourism.
