Range-bound, need clear catalyst
The SET is expected to trade range-bound. Crude oil prices held steady as the market monitors Middle East developments after President Trump stated the US is negotiating with Iran, though Tehran denied direct talks while confirming discussions with Oman to expand shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, declining bond yields provided mild support for risk assets. Investors are expected to continue rotating into value and laggard stocks. Technically, the index fluctuates in search of a clear direction; reclaiming and holding above the 10-day moving average would signal an improved technical outlook.
Today's highlights
• President Trump announced the cancellation of plans to strike Iran and reached an agreement in principle, causing Brent crude prices to decline further toward US$80/bbl, reflecting easing concerns over Middle East tensions. This serves as a positive sentiment for anti-oil plays.
• India announced an increase in export tariffs on refined petroleum products effective August 3 to discourage exports and preserve domestic reserves amid global supply disruptions. Positive for refiners (BCP, TOP, SPRC).
• Foreign tourist arrivals to Thailand last week stood at 567,312 (-2.9% WoW) due to security concerns along the southern border. However, long-haul arrivals continued to expand, bringing total arrivals in 7M26 to 18.51mn. Foreign tourist arrivals are expected to see a clear recovery in 4Q26, positive for tourism (ERW, CENTEL).
• The Prime Minister signaled readiness to consider extending the tourism stimulus scheme following positive feedback, subject to budget constraints and economic conditions. The measure has supported domestic purchasing power recently, presenting a slight positive sentiment for commerce (CPALL) and consumer finance (MTC, SAWAD).
• Bloomberg reported that China Mobile is considering the potential sale of its 7.8% stake in TRUE. We initially view this development as having no impact on TRUE's fundamental factors; any pullback in TRUE's share price presents a buying opportunity.
Strategy today
In the near term, we expect the SET to trade sideways. While risk factors continue to weigh — including Middle East tensions driving crude oil price volatility and inflation pressures, global technology stock volatility, and the market's focus on key US economic data this week (employment and manufacturing PMI) that will influence fund flows into EM markets — positive factors are still expected to underpin the index, including the onset of the 2Q26 earnings season for the Real Sector which supports stock-specific speculation, as well as a stabilizing baht that is conducive to the return of fund flows. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".
Trading today
We view the SET as likely to trade sideways. While risk factors including Middle East tensions, global technology stock volatility, and the awaited US economic data (employment, PMI) — which affect fund flows into EM markets — continue to weigh, the market still finds support from 2Q26 Real Sector earnings speculation and a stabilizing baht. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:
Trading ideas: 1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26 this week, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: GLOBAL, TRUE, ADVANC, GULF. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Geopolitical plays — Stocks benefiting from the renewed flare-up of Middle East tensions, focusing on upstream energy play PTTEP (buy on dips with strict stop-loss discipline). 4) Bond yield plays — Stocks set to benefit if the Fed begins signaling a tighter monetary policy stance on renewed inflation concerns: BLA, TLI, KBANK, KTB.
Daily Top Picks
BCH: Laggard stock expected to be a target for Thai stock market fund inflows. Signals of returning patient traffic have been observed since April, with 2H26 revenue projected to recover more strongly than 1H26. Upside risk stems from the potential Social Security reimbursement rate hike, expected to become clearer in 4Q26. Short-term TP is Bt11.00.
MTC: Short-term catalyst from declining government bond yields. 2Q26 net profit is projected to reach a new record high of Bt1.87bn, supported by loan growth and improved NIM. Valuation remains attractive, trading at 9.7x 2026F PE, with foreign ownership below historical averages. Short-term TP is Bt35.50.
