Sideways, focus on earnings
The SET is expected to move sideways, as fund inflows stall due to profit-taking. Meanwhile, surrounding factors require close monitoring, including the Middle East situation, which risks escalating after Houthis attacked a Saudi oil tanker, alongside new US tariff measures following the expiration of Section 122 tomorrow. However, the market is expected to remain focused on corporate stocks with strong expected 2Q26 earnings, with today's key event being the ECB meeting. Technically, the index is consolidating but holding above its 10-day moving average; remaining above this level keeps the outlook positive. Supports are at 1250/1244, resistances at 1265/1270.
Today's highlights
• President Trump pledged to strike Iranian bridges and power plants in response to any attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, with plans to target the Pickaxe Mountain site believed to house another nuclear facility. Brent crude holding above US$90/bbl is positive for PTTEP, refiners (BCP, TOP, SPRC, IRPC), and petrochemicals (PTTGC, IVL).
• The Fuel Fund Executive Committee raised retail fuel prices across all types by Bt0.90/litre today to preserve the Oil Fuel Fund's liquidity, which faces a daily subsidy burden of over Bt651mn and a deficit of Bt62.0bn. This acts as a negative sentiment for oil retailers and presses domestic purchasing power.
• Tomorrow (July 24) marks the end of the 150-day period for the US 10% tariff under Section 122. Markets are watching for the replacement under Section 301, expected tomorrow night, which will impose a 10% global rate and 12.5% on 60 economies that failed labor law compliance checks.
• The 10-year US Treasury yield rose continuously to 4.65%, near peak levels seen during the Middle East conflict in May 2026, reflecting concerns over potential Fed monetary tightening. This provides positive sentiment for insurers (BLA, TLI) and banks (KTB, BBL, KBANK).
• The Bank of Japan may accelerate policy rate hikes after the yen weakened to a 39-year low of 163 per US dollar amid heightened inflation risks, fueling short-term exchange rate volatility across Asia.
Strategy today
In the near term, we see the SET as likely to pause and consolidate. While the market draws support from easing concerns over tighter monetary policy at major central banks following softer-than-expected global June inflation readings, along with Thailand's proactive fiscal policy and 2Q26 earnings season speculation, a number of overhangs remain to be monitored — including prolonged geopolitical risks that continue to fuel supply shortage concerns, global technology sector volatility, and US tariff negotiations under Section 301 ahead of the existing 10% Section 122 tariff rate expiring on Jul 24. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".
Trading today
We view the SET as likely to pause and consolidate. While the market draws support from easing global inflation, Thailand's proactive fiscal policy, and 2Q26 earnings speculation, headwinds remain from geopolitical risks, global technology sector volatility, and US tariff negotiations (Section 301) ahead of the existing measures expiring on Jul 24. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas as follows:
Trading ideas: 1) Geopolitical plays — Stocks benefiting from the renewed flare-up of Middle East tensions: upstream energy (PTTEP) and refiners (TOP, SPRC, BCP); focus on buying on dips with strict stop-loss discipline. 2) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY and QoQ earnings growth in 2Q26 over the next two weeks, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform pick is: HMPRO. 3) Laggard plays — Stocks whose share prices have underperformed the SET on a YTD basis; focus on big-cap names expected to benefit from sector rotation and with strong fundamentals: TU, MINT, HMPRO, BDMS, MTC, CPALL. 4) Export plays — Stocks expected to gain positive momentum if new US tariff rates do not exceed the prior peak of 19%: TU, ITC, DELTA, HANA, KCE.
Daily Top Picks
AMATA: 2Q26 net profit is expected at Bt1.12bn, jumping nearly 7-fold driven by transfers of high-margin Smart City project land, offsetting a 50% YoY decline in presales. The 2026 land sales target remains maintained at 2,800 rai, backed by a solid backlog of Bt18.4bn. 2026 net profit is projected at Bt3.69bn (+17% YoY). Short-term TP is Bt29.50.
HANA: Short-term catalyst from positive momentum of global tech stock recovery and weaker baht supporting export revenue. Production of AI solid-state cooling devices is scheduled to begin in July 2026, ramping up in 1Q27, with additional new orders for two AI-related products expected to start production in 2Q27–4Q27. Short-term TP is Bt40.50.
