24 Jul 26 8:14 AM

Trading Idea

Pressure from the Middle East

The SET is expected to head lower as crude oil prices and bond yields surge following US threats of a major military operation. While this provides support to upstream energy, petrochemicals, and insurance stocks, overall market sentiment remains negative. Additionally, risk-off selling ahead of next week's mid-week public holiday in Thailand will add further pressure. Key factors to monitor today include Thailand's June export-import figures, DELTA's 2Q26 earnings report, and the implementation of US Section 301 tariffs as Section 122 expires today. Technically, a breakdown below the 10-day moving average could trigger further downside.

Today's highlights

• Brent crude broke above US$100/bbl, reaching its highest level since May, on intensifying Middle East fears after Houthis attacked a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea. This stoked inflation concerns and pushed 10-year US Treasury yields to 4.7%, the highest since 2025. Positive short-term sentiment for upstream energy (PTTEP), petrochemicals (PTTGC, IVL), and life insurers (BLA, TLI).
• The US announced new Section 301 tariffs of 10%–12.5% on 60 countries (Thailand, Vietnam, and China face 12.5%) citing failure to prevent forced labor, effective 00:01 today to replace expiring Section 122 tariffs. Neutral for exporters (TU, ITC, DELTA, HANA, KCE) as rates align with prior levels.
• The ECB held policy rates at 2.25% as expected while monitoring renewed Middle East fighting driving energy prices higher. Markets now price in up to two rate hikes by the ECB and BOE this year to curb oil-driven inflation. Short-term negative for risk assets, especially anti-oil plays.
• The ERC maintained power tariffs for Sep–Dec 2026 at Bt3.95/unit, utilizing Bt16.1bn in claw-back funds. Neutral for SPP power plants (GPSC, BGRIM). Meanwhile, EPPO reduced ex-refinery diesel prices across all types by Bt2.40/litre during July 24–Aug 15, 2026 to ease living costs and Oil Fund burdens, short-term negative for refiners (BCP, TOP, SPRC).
• The BOI reported 1H26 investment applications at Bt1.47tn (+37% YoY), with FDI reaching Bt1.37tn (+80% YoY), reflecting strong confidence in Thailand's potential as a future industry hub. Positive for industrial estates (AMATA, WHA).

Strategy today

In the near term, we see the SET as likely to pause and consolidate. While the market draws support from easing concerns over tighter monetary policy at major central banks following softer-than-expected global June inflation readings, along with Thailand's proactive fiscal policy and 2Q26 earnings season speculation, a number of overhangs remain to be monitored — including prolonged geopolitical risks that continue to fuel supply shortage concerns, global technology sector volatility, and US tariff negotiations under Section 301 ahead of the existing 10% Section 122 tariff rate expiring on Jul 24. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".

Trading today

We view the SET as likely to pause and consolidate. While the market draws support from easing global inflation, Thailand's proactive fiscal policy, and 2Q26 earnings speculation, headwinds remain from geopolitical risks, global technology sector volatility, and US tariff negotiations (Section 301) ahead of the existing measures expiring on Jul 24. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas as follows:

  1. Domestic plays — Focus on big-cap stocks benefiting from government measures, with share prices still lagging: CPALL, CPN, GLOBAL, ADVANC, TRUE, MTC, BEM.
  2. New normal plays — Stocks positioned to benefit from the clean energy transition, production base relocation, and long-term economic restructuring in line with global megatrends: GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, WHA, AMATA.
  3. High dividend plays — As a defensive haven during market volatility and a source of steady cash flow returns, split into two sub-themes: 1) Short-term interim dividend capture, with expected Div. Interim Yield >2% (announcements anticipated Aug–Sep): ADVANC, OR, PTT, PTTEP, SCCC, SIRI, TQM, TU; and 2) Long-term dividend capture for sustainable returns, with expected Div. Yield >5% p.a.: AP, BBL, FTREIT, LHSC, PTT.

Trading ideas:
1) Geopolitical plays — Stocks benefiting from the renewed flare-up of Middle East tensions: upstream energy (PTTEP) and refiners (TOP, SPRC, BCP); focus on buying on dips with strict stop-loss discipline. 2) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY and QoQ earnings growth in 2Q26 over the next two weeks, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform pick is: HMPRO. 3) Laggard plays — Stocks whose share prices have underperformed the SET on a YTD basis; focus on big-cap names expected to benefit from sector rotation and with strong fundamentals: TU, MINT, HMPRO, BDMS, MTC, CPALL. 4) Export plays — Stocks expected to gain positive momentum if new US tariff rates do not exceed the prior peak of 19%: TU, ITC, DELTA, HANA, KCE.

Daily Top Picks

ADVANC: Minimal impact expected from Middle East tensions, while operating performance looks set for continuous growth. 2Q26 core profit is projected to expand 24% YoY and 1% QoQ, driven by mobile and fixed broadband (FBB) businesses along with disciplined cost control. An interim dividend payout of Bt8.70/share (2.3% yield) is anticipated. Short-term TP is Bt380.

TU: Overhang cleared following the USTR's Section 301 tariff announcement at a competitive rate. 2Q26 net profit is expected to remain flat YoY and rise 12% QoQ, with continued growth projected for 2H26 on normalizing cost levels, a weaker baht, and potential upside from prior US tariff refunds. Short-term TP is Bt12.70.
