Recover, expecting Hormuz reopens

The SET is expected to rebound, supported by a sharp drop in crude oil prices and falling bond yields following news that the US and Iran are close to reaching an agreement. This fuels expectations that the Strait of Hormuz may reopen to shipping, which, while pressuring upstream energy stocks, boosts overall market sentiment, particularly for anti-oil plays and lower-yield beneficiaries. Domestic focus today centers on Thailand's July inflation figures, with headline CPI expected at +2.55% YoY and core CPI at +1.42% YoY. Technically, despite a minor pullback, the index is projected to trade with short-term volatility within a range as it awaits a clearer direction.

Today's highlights

• The US Treasury Secretary stated that the US and Iran are likely to reach an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz soon. Brent crude dropped below US$80/bbl, benefiting global risk assets, particularly anti-oil sectors like airlines (AAV, BA), power producers (GPSC, BGRIM), and tourism (ERW, CENTEL), while pressuring upstream energy (PTTEP).
• Focus today is on Thailand's July 2026 inflation rate, expected at +2.55% YoY. A lower-than-expected figure would signal easing living cost pressures and give the MPC room to ease monetary policy, benefiting consumer finance (MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR) via lower funding costs, and commerce (CPALL, BJC, CPN).
• FETCO reported the 3-month Investor Confidence Index surged into the "overheat" zone, expected to rise for 1-2 years with the SET target seen reaching 1,700 points this year. Gains are driven by fund inflows, government stimulus, and FDI relocations, with banking attracting the most interest.
• The government plans PM Office regulations to oversee 3 data center categories to prevent power and water competition, alongside zoning in the EEC and Mae Moh. Neutral-to-positive for industrial estates (AMATA, WHA) and power producers (GULF, GPSC, BGRIM) with integrated infrastructure.
• The BOI is pushing smart electronics investment for AI and data centers while organizing THECA 2026 to connect the supply chain. Long-term positive for industrial estates (WHA, AMATA), electronics (DELTA, KCE, HANA), and power producers (GULF, GPSC).

Strategy today

In the near term, we expect the SET to trade sideways. While risk factors continue to weigh — including Middle East tensions driving crude oil price volatility and inflation pressures, global technology stock volatility, and the market's focus on key US economic data this week (employment and manufacturing PMI) that will influence fund flows into EM markets — positive factors are still expected to underpin the index, including the onset of the 2Q26 earnings season for the Real Sector which supports stock-specific speculation, as well as a stabilizing baht that is conducive to the return of fund flows. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".

Trading today

We view the SET as likely to trade sideways. While risk factors including Middle East tensions, global technology stock volatility, and the awaited US economic data (employment, PMI) — which affect fund flows into EM markets — continue to weigh, the market still finds support from 2Q26 Real Sector earnings speculation and a stabilizing baht. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:

  1. New normal plays — Stocks positioned to benefit from the clean energy transition, production base relocation, and long-term economic restructuring in line with global megatrends: GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, GUNKUL, WHA, AMATA.
  2. High dividend plays — As a defensive haven during market volatility and a source of steady cash flow returns, split into two sub-themes: 1) Short-term interim dividend capture, with expected Div. Interim Yield >2% (announcements anticipated Aug–Sep): ADVANC, OR, PTT, PTTEP, SCCC, SIRI, TQM, TU; and 2) Long-term dividend capture for sustainable returns, with expected Div. Yield >5% p.a.: AP, BBL, FTREIT, LHSC, PTT.
  3. Domestic plays — Focus on big-cap stocks benefiting from government economic stimulus measures, with share prices still lagging: CPALL, CPN, GLOBAL, ADVANC, TRUE, MTC, BEM, ERW.

Trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26 this week, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: GLOBAL, TRUE, ADVANC, GULF. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Geopolitical plays — Stocks benefiting from the renewed flare-up of Middle East tensions, focusing on upstream energy play PTTEP (buy on dips with strict stop-loss discipline). 4) Bond yield plays — Stocks set to benefit if the Fed begins signaling a tighter monetary policy stance on renewed inflation concerns: BLA, TLI, KBANK, KTB.

Daily Top Picks

GPSC: Short-term catalysts from declining bond yields and fuel costs. Upside potential stems from potential PPA renewals, data center opportunities via land and utility leasing, AEPL's IPO in India, as well as Direct PPA and PDP 2026, which open opportunities to expand new capacity. Short-term TP is Bt53.75.

TIDLOR: Supported by declining government bond yields. 2Q26 net profit is projected at Bt1.5bn (+15% YoY), with 2026 net profit expected to deliver the highest growth in the sector, driven by higher NIM, lower credit costs, and strong fee income growth. Meanwhile, its share buyback program provides additional support to the stock price. Short-term TP is Bt19.80.
