Sideways, expecting volatility
The SET is expected to trade range-bound, supported by progress in US-Iran negotiations and expectations surrounding the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While crude oil prices holding in negative territory provides a boost to risk sentiment—particularly for anti-oil equities—investors should remain cautious of volatility from profit-taking and sector rotation. This rotation has spurred some foreign selling, inducing index fluctuations. Technically, despite the mild pullback, the index is projected to fluctuate within its range in the short term as it awaits a clearer directional signal.
Today's highlights
• Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement on maritime route management, raising hopes for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and boosting sentiment for global risk assets. Positive for anti-oil plays such as airlines (AAV, BA), utilities (GPSC, BGRIM), and tourism (ERW, CENTEL), but negative for upstream energy (PTTEP).
• The Cabinet approved the setup of a Data Center Policy Board to accelerate investment oversight and establish operational guidelines to promote the economy alongside energy security. It also approved Bt7.2bn for the Klong Wang Tanod Reservoir project to support EEC water usage. Positive for industrial estates (AMATA, WHA) and power producers (GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, WHAUP).
• The TPSO reported July 2026 CPI grew +1.95% YoY, slowing from the prior month and coming in below market expectations due to easing oil prices, while maintaining its full-year forecast at 1.5%–2.5%. Meanwhile, JSCCIB raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 1.6%–2.0% (from 1.2%–1.6%) on recovery in exports and investment, helping ease domestic purchasing power pressure. Positive for commerce (CPALL, CPN, CRC) and finance (MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR).
• President Trump's administration revealed it has refunded over US$100bn, or ~60%, of US tariff collections. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce plans to push 13 key export products for additional tax exemptions in the next round. Positive for US-focused exporters (TU, ITC).
• The Finance Minister announced a restructuring of the BOI to drive investment, targeting Bt700bn in actual investments this year. The "BOI to IPO" initiative will also be pushed to attract tech companies to list on the SET for sustainable fund inflows, supporting the long-term economy and capital market.
Strategy today
In the near term, we expect the SET to trade sideways. While risk factors continue to weigh — including Middle East tensions driving crude oil price volatility and inflation pressures, global technology stock volatility, and the market's focus on key US economic data this week (employment and manufacturing PMI) that will influence fund flows into EM markets — positive factors are still expected to underpin the index, including the onset of the 2Q26 earnings season for the Real Sector which supports stock-specific speculation, as well as a stabilizing baht that is conducive to the return of fund flows. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".
Trading today
We view the SET as likely to trade sideways. While risk factors including Middle East tensions, global technology stock volatility, and the awaited US economic data (employment, PMI) — which affect fund flows into EM markets — continue to weigh, the market still finds support from 2Q26 Real Sector earnings speculation and a stabilizing baht. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 3 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:
Trading ideas: 1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26 this week, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: GLOBAL, TRUE, ADVANC, GULF. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Anti-oil Plays – Stocks directly benefited from easing situation in the Middle East, for example, Airlines (AAV, BA), Utilities (GPSC, BGRIM) and Construction Materials (SCC, SCCC).
Daily Top Picks
GULF: Short-term catalysts from declining government bond yields and fuel costs. 2Q26 core profit is projected to reach a new record high of Bt11.0bn (+60% YoY, +22% QoQ), driven by strong electricity demand and high dividend income. Additional growth upside stems from data center projects and PDP 2026. Short-term TP is Bt67.75.
MTC: Short-term catalysts from continuously declining government bond yields and slowing Thai inflation, supporting asset quality. 2Q26 net profit is expected to hit a record high of Bt1.87bn (+14% YoY, +3% QoQ), underpinned by loan expansion and improved NIM. Full-year 2026 net profit is projected to grow 12% YoY. Short-term TP is Bt36.25.
