Trading Idea

Oil and bond yield pressure returns

The SET is expected to move range-bound after pricing in progress from US-Iran negotiations. Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices and hawkish comments from several Fed officials supporting rate hikes may weigh on market sentiment, particularly for anti-oil and consumer finance plays. However, upstream energy and refinery stocks are expected to advance and cushion the market. Domestic focus today centers on Thailand's July Consumer Confidence Index, while US July Nonfarm Payrolls will be released tonight. Technically, the index holds above the lower boundary of its uptrend channel, though high volatility is likely to limit any upside rebound.

Today's highlights

• Brent crude rose 3.8% DoD to close at US$82.49/bbl following reports that Iran is considering a bill to ban US and Israeli vessels from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, positive for upstream energy (PTTEP). Meanwhile, Saudi Aramco announced a price cut for next month's crude deliveries to Asia, setting it US$2/bbl below the regional benchmark and supporting high GRMs, positive for refiners importing Middle Eastern crude (TOP, SPRC, BCP).
• US Treasury yields rebounded after the Minneapolis Fed President stated that interest rate hikes are necessary to curb inflation and avoid aggressive hikes in the future, weighing on risk asset sentiment. Short-term negative for consumer finance (MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR), which is sensitive to rising funding costs.
• The Finance Minister considers extension of economic stimulus as the current phase circulating Bt100bn and 85% reached regional provinces, while the tourism stimulus is expected to be finalized within one month. Positive sentiment for commerce (CPALL, CPAXT, BJC, CRC) and tourism (ERW, AWC, CENTEL, MINT).
• The BOI is elevating its data center evaluation criteria to emphasize Thai workforce development, AI ecosystems, domestic supply chains, and sustainable power, water, and environmental management. Cumulative investment reached 42 projects valued at Bt750bn. Long-term positive for industrial estates (AMATA, WHA) and power producers (GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, WHAUP).
• UTCC forecasts spending during Mother's Day this year at Bt11.1bn (+0.7%), a 7-year high, though cautious spending remains due to high living costs and a mid-week non-consecutive holiday. Neutral for commerce (CPN, CRC) and restaurants (ZEN, M, AU) given the gradual recovery in purchasing power.

Strategy today

In the near term, we expect the SET to trade sideways. While risk factors continue to weigh — including Middle East tensions driving crude oil price volatility and inflation pressures, global technology stock volatility, and the market's focus on key US economic data this week (employment and manufacturing PMI) that will influence fund flows into EM markets — positive factors are still expected to underpin the index, including the onset of the 2Q26 earnings season for the Real Sector which supports stock-specific speculation, as well as a stabilizing baht that is conducive to the return of fund flows. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".

Trading today

We view the SET as likely to trade sideways. While risk factors including Middle East tensions, global technology stock volatility, and the awaited US economic data (employment, PMI) — which affect fund flows into EM markets — continue to weigh, the market still finds support from 2Q26 Real Sector earnings speculation and a stabilizing baht. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 3 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:

  1. New normal plays — Stocks positioned to benefit from the clean energy transition, production base relocation, and long-term economic restructuring in line with global megatrends: GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, GUNKUL, WHA, AMATA.
  2. High dividend plays — As a defensive haven during market volatility and a source of steady cash flow returns, split into two sub-themes: 1) Short-term interim dividend capture, with expected Div. Interim Yield >2% (announcements anticipated Aug–Sep): ADVANC, OR, PTT, PTTEP, SCCC, SIRI, TQM, TU; and 2) Long-term dividend capture for sustainable returns, with expected Div. Yield >5% p.a.: AP, BBL, FTREIT, LHSC, PTT.
  3. Domestic plays — Focus on big-cap stocks benefiting from government economic stimulus measures, with share prices still lagging: CPALL, CPN, GLOBAL, ADVANC, TRUE, MTC, BEM, ERW.

Trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26 this week, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: GLOBAL, TRUE, ADVANC, GULF. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Anti-oil Plays – Stocks directly benefited from easing situation in the Middle East, for example, Airlines (AAV, BA), Utilities (GPSC, BGRIM) and Construction Materials (SCC, SCCC)

Daily Top Picks

AMATA: Supported by investment inflows and base relocation to Thailand. 2Q26 net profit is expected to surge 697% YoY to Bt1.12bn on transfers of high-margin Smart City land. 2026 land sales are on track to meet the 2,800-rai target, backed by a strong backlog of Bt18.4bn. Short-term TP is Bt30.25.

TRUE: Supported by continuous earnings growth. 3Q26F profit is projected to expand YoY and QoQ off a low base last year and reduced spectrum costs. The stock has resumed dividend payouts, starting with an interim dividend of Bt0.15/share (1.1% yield), going XD on Aug 17. Short-term TP is Bt13.80.
