14 Aug 26 7:16 AM

2Q26: Record profit meets expectations

PTT reported net profit of Bt52.5bn in 2Q26, more than doubling YoY and QoQ. EBITDA, excluding hedging impacts, rose 94% YoY and 35% QoQ to Bt156.3bn, driven by broad-based improvement across core businesses, led by E&P, Gas, and P&R. Although 3Q26F core profit may ease QoQ on lower E&P sales volumes and weaker oil prices, PTT’s integrated business model should help offset the impact. We raise our 2026F net profit forecast by 17%, mainly on stronger gas earnings in 1H26. We maintain OUTPERFORM and roll forward our SOTP-based TP to mid-2027 at Bt47 (from Bt43). Dividend yield of >6% remains compelling.

Gas and E&P were the key drivers of earnings growth in 2Q26. Gas EBITDA rose 85% YoY and 50% QoQ, supported by the new gas pricing structure, which lowered feed gas costs, as well as higher sales volumes (+5% QoQ to 4,220 MMSCFD), stronger petrochemical-linked prices, and robust power demand. Gas earnings in 1H26 exceeded our expectations, although the gas supply and trading business remained pressured as gas costs rose faster than selling prices. PTTEP, which contributed 48% of EBITDA, reported record earnings on all-time-high sales volumes and a higher ASP, providing a significant boost to PTT’s profitability.

P&R segment continued to perform well despite falling QoQ. P&R segment delivered higher EBITDA in 2Q26, up more than 100% YoY, driven by a sharp rise in refining margins. Market GRM increased to US$16.2/bbl from US$4.6/bbl in 2Q25 and wider petrochemical spreads across Olefins and Aromatics. Nonetheless, EBITDA declined 34% QoQ due to a Bt22bn inventory loss, compared with a Bt46bn inventory gain in 1Q26, despite stronger underlying refining fundamentals. Meanwhile,  oil business posted operating loss in 2Q26 due to softer demand, weaker marketing margins, and substantial inventory losses following the sharp decline in oil prices. Oil sales volume fell 16% QoQ after panic buying linked to the Iran conflict in late 1Q26 and early 2Q26.

3Q26F outlook: E&P to lead the earnings decline QoQ. We expect PTT’s core profit to ease QoQ in 3Q26F, primarily due to lower E&P earnings resulting from maintenance shutdowns deferred from 1H26 to 3Q26, mainly at producing assets in the Gulf of Thailand. However, E&P ASP should remain favorable, supported by a 4% QoQ increase in gas prices, which account for 74-75% of total sales volume. The decline should be partly offset by an improvement in the oil retail business as inventory loss impacts diminish and domestic demand normalizes. Favorable middle-distillate GRM should continue to support refining earnings, although inventory loss risk remains.

Raise TP to Bt47 based on SOTP; revise 2026F profit forecast up 17%. Strong 1H26 net profit of Bt78bn (+75% YoY) led us to raise our 2026F earnings forecast by 17%, mainly reflecting stronger gas business performance. Following the earnings upgrade and the rollover of our valuation to mid-2027, we raise our SOTP-based TP to Bt47 from Bt43. We continue to see an attractive risk-reward profile, with the stock trading at 0.9x 2027F PBV versus its 10-year average of 1.2x. A dividend yield above 6%, supported by strong cash flow generation and a solid balance sheet, underpins our OUTPERFORM rating.

Key risks: Economic slowdown, oil price volatility, asset impairment, regulatory changes, and government intervention in retail oil pricing. ESG risks include environmental impact and transition to clean energy.
