3 Aug 26 7:04 AM

2Q26: Record-high profit beats estimate

PTTEP posted a record quarterly net profit of Bt27.2bn, up 101% YoY and 130% QoQ, beating our forecast and in line with consensus. Strong QoQ growth was driven by higher operating profit and derivative gains. Core profit rose 74% YoY and 22% QoQ to Bt24.3bn, supported by record sales volume and higher ASP. 1H26 net profit increased 30% YoY to Bt39bn, accounting for 59% of our full-year forecast. We expect 3Q26 earnings to soften QoQ due to lower sales volume from maintenance shutdowns in Thailand deferred from 1H26. We maintain OUTPERFORM and raise our DCF-based TP to Bt170 from Bt162, based on a long-term Brent assumption of US$64/bbl.

Record sales volume and favorable ASP boosted core profit. Core profit increased 74% YoY and 22% QoQ to Bt24.3bn, driven mainly by higher sales volume and stronger average selling prices (ASP). Sales volume reached a record 573kBOED (+13% YoY, +3% QoQ), supported by sustained gas nominations from the Gulf of Thailand throughout the quarter, while Algeria contributed two oil cargo liftings compared with one cargo in 1Q26. ASP rose 20% YoY and 15% QoQ to US$52.89/BOE, in line with higher global oil prices. Meanwhile, unit cost increased 6% QoQ to US$29.78/BOE—though down 4% YoY—mainly due to higher depreciation, depletion and amortization (DD&A) expenses from newly completed assets, as well as exploration write-offs recorded during the quarter.

Non-operating items generated a gain of Bt2.8bn (US$87mn), primarily driven by oil hedging gains of US$94mn, vs. a loss of US$267mn in 1Q26. The turnaround was mainly attributable to movements in the forward oil curve. Mark-to-market losses recognized earlier, when oil prices rose sharply, were partially reversed as the forward curve eased toward the end of the quarter. FX movements resulted in a loss of US$7mn, reflecting the depreciation of Thai baht and Malaysian ringgit.

3Q26 volume to fall QoQ. Despite solid 1H26 sales volume of 563kBOED, management has maintained its 2026 target of 560kBOED. Sales volume is expected to decline to 525kBOED in 3Q26 due to maintenance shutdowns at operating assets in Thailand and Myanmar. These shutdowns were deferred from 1H26 because of LNG supply shortages during the Iran conflict. This is in line with planned outages at PTT's gas separation plants in Aug-Sep 2026. We expect full-year sales volume to come in around 1% below the target at 556-557kBOED, while our forecast remains 3% below the company's guidance. Gas prices are expected to remain strong in 3Q26, benefiting from higher oil prices and contractual pricing mechanisms in Myanmar and Malaysia.

Fine-tuning earnings estimates. We raise our 2026F net profit forecast by 5% following 1H26 results and minor assumption changes. Our Brent price forecasts remain unchanged at US$82/bbl in 2026, US$70/bbl in 2027, and US$69/bbl in 2028. We raise our end-2026 TP to Bt170 from Bt162, reflecting higher earnings and cash flow forecasts. Our DCF-based TP is based on a long-term Brent assumption of US$64/bbl, vs. US$68-69/bbl on the forward curve. We maintain OUTPERFORM on strong cash flow generation and dividend capacity. The interim dividend of Bt4.50/share (XD: 14 Aug) implies a 45.8% payout ratio and a 6% annualized yield.

Risk factors: 1) Volatile crude oil price, 2) higher unit cost, 3) asset impairment and 4) regulatory changes on GHG emissions. Key ESG risk factors are the environmental impact of its business and adapting to transition to clean energy.
