22 Jul 26 6:35 AM

2Q26: Earnings reached a record high

SCGP report ’s core earnings reach record high, beat our and consensus estimate by 14-18%, rising both YoY and QoQ due to Fajar Paper returning to net profit on higher selling prices, higher sale volume, and effective cost management. The 3Q26 core earnings outlook remains positive YoY, driven by continue improving Fajar Paper operation and benefits from government stimulus packages. We have revised up our 2026-27 core earnings forecast by 9% and 13% in 2026-27. We maintain our OUTPERFORM recommendation with a new end-2026 TP of Bt39 (from Bt36), based on 24x PE, or -0.5 SD of the 5-year mean.

Reported 2Q26 core earnings reach quarterly record high. SCGP reported 2Q26 net profit of Bt2.3bn, reaching a quarterly record high, beat our and consensus estimates by 18% and 14%. Net profit surged 128% YoY and 47% QoQ, driven mainly by Fajar Paper returning to a net profit of Bt210mn in 2Q26 after 14 consecutive quarters of losses thanks to selling price hikes following regional packaging paper price increases, aligned with the market leader, Asia Pulp and Paper, which agreed on the need for selling price hikes. Sales volume also increased, backed by recovering domestic consumption and higher exports to China. Consequently, SCGP's gross margin expanded to 23.7% in 2Q26 (2Q25: 18.2%, 1Q26: 21%), marking a 5-year high, supported mainly by Fajar's recovery mentioned above.

SCGP announced executive leadership transition. CEO (Khun Wichan Jitpakdee) will retire, and current CFO Mr. Danaidej Ketsuwan will succeed him as CEO, effective January 2027. We expect SCGP's strategic continuity to remain intact.

Announced dividend payment for 1H26 of Bt0.4/share (XD date 5 Aug), a dividend payout ratio of 44% and implying an annualized dividend yield of 2.6%.

The 3Q26 core profit outlook should remain stronger YoY but soften QoQ. We expect 3Q26 core profit to continue to increase YoY because of management's successful turnaround strategy for Fajar Paper, which includes restructuring high gas cost contracts, restructuring its debt position, and improving production efficiency. Moreover, government stimulus measures, such as the Thai Plus scheme in Thailand and consumption-boosting initiatives in Indonesia, provide additional support for the packaging business. However, we expect core profit to soften QoQ because of higher raw material (RCP) costs from rising freight rates, higher transportation costs, and an upward trend in coal prices. While the rainy season to slightly impact Thailand’s sale volume in early 3Q26.

Revisit core earnings forecast. We revised up our core earnings forecast by 9% and 13% for 2026-27 to reflect the better-than-expected Fajar paper operation. We raise our gross margin assumption to 21.2% in 2026 and 21.4% in 2027 from 20.7% previously.

Action & recommendation. We maintain our OUTPERFORM rating with a new end-2026 TP of Bt39 (from Bt36), based on 24x PE, or -0.5 SD of the 5-year mean.

Key risks are a continued slow economy in China and geopolitical unrest raising coal cost. Key ESG risks are energy management, sustainability products, and high greenhouse gas emissions (E).
